Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California Responds to Trump Administration Blatant Disregard for Proven Science: California Must Respond
Sacramento, CA — The Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California (CSHC) has issued a statement following the Environmental Protection Agency’s draconian rule that repeals the landmark 2009 findings on greenhouse gases, which has been a lynchpin in the country’s climate policy agenda, and the nation’s tailpipe rules that cut pollution from cars and trucks. The statement comes on the heels of major organizations standing together in a legal challenge that was filed against the Trump Administration today.
“In one fell swoop, the Trump Administration has undone decades of work that has been instrumental in protecting public health from the scientifically proven impacts of climate change. The harms will be felt most acutely across frontline communities that are already burdened with lower air quality, increased pollution and higher rates of asthma, cancer, and other illnesses. California must step up and take swift action to protect millions of Californians in harm’s way. In recent months, Trump has moved to fast track offshore drilling up and down the California coast, open up wide swaths of our public lands to dangerous drilling, and throw out our state’s landmark health buffer zone law. Now, he is making climate denial the official policy of the federal government, and threatening the millions of Californians who live with toxic drilling in their neighborhoods. We must safeguard against these actions as much as possible, or lives will undoubtedly be lost. We look forward to working with the State Legislature, Newsom Administration, and California Attorney General to counter this assault.”
The Trump Administration’s move rolls back the 2009 finding regarding greenhouse gases which stated that, “the current and projected concentrations of the six key well-mixed greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)—in the atmosphere threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations.”
It also rolls back the nation’s tailpipe rules, which would have cut dangerous pollution from the passenger fleet and saved the average American driver about $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance over the life of a vehicle.
